Public School together...

I attended Massey Public School from 1951 to 1959. Tyrone Gilbert attended the same school and he was three/two grades ahead of me. My memories of Tyrone are of an adolescent who was incredibly gifted physically... he was a natural athlete and back in the Rock-n-Roll Days, nobody handled the dance floor any better than Tyrone. A gifted hockey player, he had the natural talent to "go all the way" but he lacked the willingness to be coached. Somehow, Tyrone was challenged by having to follow the rules, whether rules of the educational enterprise or rules of the sport of hockey. Always on the edge of discipline and eventually on the edge of the law, Tyrone had his challenges in life and those challenges had a strong negative effect on his life and the lives of some close to him. It isn't fair after one's passing to play psychological games and make assumptions as to why one's life took the other road; nonetheless, here was a young man who needed the influence of a strong male figure in his early and adolescent life and Tyrone did not have that influence. Instead, his life appeared to be governed by a desire to do whatever seemed like fun, regardless of what a disciplined person would have done in the same situation. It was as if he had faced bleak circumstances very early in life and simply could not envision himself withholding present pleasure for long-term stability and ultimate joy. It was exciting to watch Tyrone on the hockey rink. He was fearless and he was gifted in the sport. I had the pleasure of playing a few games with him when several Massey youths were attached to teams in Espanola. How I wished at the time I had Tyrone's speed and shot. One day when I was in Grade 8 he asked me to teach him how to ski. He knew that one of my brothers and I liked to ski and not many people in Massey back then skied. I did take him up on his offer but within minutes he was skiing down hills that I would hardly attempt. He didn't need any help from me. Please understand what I am suggesting here: Tyrone Gilbert had GIFTED athleticism. Every Elementary School has a student who will always be remembered and usually for more than one's grades. Tyrone is that person and he comes to mind whenever any of us from "the late 50's to the mid 60's" gets together to recall our adolescence. Having read the touching Condolence which appears in this tribute, I feel assured that Tyrone's gifts will continue to bless those who knew them and that his limitations remained with him and did not become baggage for someone else.
