Francis Lundrigan

Miss Lucy, I remember meeting you for the first time as a young boy, when we moved up to Verner from Toronto. I did not understand why we had to call you “Miss Lucy” and why Lucy wasn’t sufficient. People told me that we used that title for you out of respect and it did not take many interactions with you to understand that respect is what you deserved. Most of the respect that I had learned, for others, at that young age, was respect that had been earned through fear, but that is not the kind of respect that you earned. The respect that you deserved was earned through your genuine kindness, compassion, and love for others that was given freely by you without any thought of yourself. Throughout my childhood I always knew that there was a safe place for me at your house. I knew I could go to your house anytime and feel protected and safe. There was one time where my brother David chased me from one end of Verner to the other to lay a classic older sibling beating on me, but I made it in your door just in time and he knew better then to follow me in there. You knew something was up but you never asked and instead just gave me some cookies, some water from your tap, and the protection that your love offered. As a troubled teenager/young adult you never lost hope in me. Every time you seen me during those years you would remind me that you knew I would turn out “Ok” and although others would be surprised by any turn around I made, you would not be. As those years passed and I matured into the person that you always told me I could be, we didn’t see each other as frequently. When we did see each other you would remind me about what you had said with a little “I told you so” and “I told your mother too, that Franny would do alright”. I had the pleasure of knowing you for over 30 years and although you were not my biological grandmother you were the only one I ever knew. I could not have asked for a better grandmother. Your love and belief in me has guided me throughout my life and impacted me in so may ways. I last seen you a little over 2 years ago and I remember thinking how beautiful you were and how kind your eyes still looked. I remember leaving Bettys that night feeling happy that my family (Leslie, Darius, and Avrum) and I had a chance to see you again, but also feeling sad knowing that your health was failing. I can still remember Avrum saying “Is dad crying?” as we pulled out of the driveway. I will miss those kind eyes and your thoughtful ways and all the wonderful things that were you. Your body may be gone, but your memory will live on in my heart and the hearts of all of those that had the pleasure of knowing you during their lifetimes. Love you always Francis Lundigan
